Leadership Conversations with Nicky Gumbel Podcast: Guvna B

In this episode, Nicky and Pippa are joined by multi-award winning rap artist and author Isaac Borquaye – more widely known as Guvna B to discuss the power of words, what the younger generation really wants & the best response to issues of inequality.

For today’s conversation, Nicky and Pippa sit down with multi-award winning rap artist and author Isaac Borquaye – more widely known as Guvna B.

The interview begins with Isaac sharing about how growing up on a council estate in East London shaped his life. Though the community was tight-knit and embracing, Isaac describes how easy it would have been for him to have ended up in a life of crime and violence. “It was guns or Jesus,” said Issac. But due to the influence of his family, friends and an encouraging primary school teacher, Isaac instead chose to live what he calls “a more positive life.” Nicky and Pippa highlight with gratitude the primary school teacher who saw more than a playground-rap-battler in Isaac, but the positive and creative influence he is today.

The conversation pivots to the topic of the next generation – how to connect with young people, and what they really long for. All of Isaac’s responses to Nicky and Pippa’s questions about youth resound with one key theme – authenticity. “Young people are getting so good at sniffing out when something isn’t authentic” said Isaac. The three of them discuss how the “put together” expert at the front is no more, and how a young person is just looking for someone who is willing to humbly journey alongside them.

The interview closes with the three of them confronting the sad reality of inequality inside and outside of the church. Isaac truthfully recounts his experience with unequal treatment, while still maintaining a loving and hopeful disposition. He asks people not to externalize issues of inequality, but to give space for healthy introspection; to honestly evaluate, with the help of the Spirit, how one might be contributing to the problem and how one can be a part of a fresh wave of healing. Isaac makes a specific call for the Church to be a leader in this – he says “Imagine if the world reflected what the church is leading in and not the other way around.”

Throughout each portion of the conversation – whether talking about how to influence the next generation, issues of inequality or the music industry – Isaac exudes a refreshing message of hope for the future. We hope you experience that sense of hope as you listen to Nicky and Pippa’s conversation with Isaac Borquaye.

Leadership Conversations with Nicky Gumbel Podcast: Christine Caine

In this episode, Nicky and Pippa are joined by speaker, author and activist Christine Caine to discuss wanting to give up at age 50, the value of seasons in obscurity, and her tried wisdom for living an integrated life.

In this episode, Nicky and Pippa are joined by speaker, author and activist Christine Caine.

Nicky and Pippa begin by asking Christine to share about her story. Christine’s early life in particular is riddled with pain and tragedy. With bravery and honesty, she shares with Nicky and Pippa the abuse she suffered at a young age and the leaked secret of her adoption. From the start of the interview, it is obvious that Christine did not become the global difference maker that she is by being dealt the right hand of cards; rather it was the fruit of difficult decisions to overcome profound adversity and to find healing, hope and purpose in Jesus.

Christine goes on to share how she came to know Jesus personally at the intersection of a variety of different church streams and influences. It’s beautiful to see how the whole Church was used by God to get a hold of Christine’s heart. After saying “yes” to life with Jesus, Christine’s following years can be characterized by one word – obscurity. She embraced faithfulness to Jesus outside of the spotlight, in places and spaces in Australia that weren’t well known or easily seen. This was the forging place for Christine’s deep love for Jesus and consistent faithfulness to His call – all things she’s admired for today on a larger stage.

In the remainder of Christine’s time with Nicky and Pippa, she shares what she senses has shifted for the Church in this season, the need for a resurgence of prayer in the body of Christ and what kept her obedient in a recent season when she wanted to throw in the towel. All throughout what Christine shares there is such contagious passion and vulnerability. The interview ends with Nicky asking Christine how she manages to hold all her initiatives, relationships and priorities in balance. Her response – “My strength does not come from me. It doesn’t come from a strategic plan, or a balanced life … it comes from the Spirit of God.” A simple response from someone who is as devoted to God off the stage as she is on it.

We hope this conversation between Nicky, Pippa and Christine serves to encourage and inspire you.

In this episode, Nicky sits down for a conversation with the 105th Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby and his wife Caroline.

The conversation begins with casual dialogue between these evident, life-long friends. Nicky reflects on how he’s known both Caroline and Justin longer than they’ve known each other – for more than 40 years. This brings the now Archbishop and his wife to memory lane, reminiscing about how they met, their peculiar first date and how they ultimately came to faith in Jesus. After Justin and Caroline share how their stories intertwined, with Nicky’s prompting, the two of them share about smuggling Bibles into totalitarian contexts as newlyweds and Justin’s ministry in Nigeria under the threat of the militia.

After the discussion continues on to Justin’s in-disguise hospital visits and his favourite moment with Pope Francis, the three of them conclude their time together with Caroline sharing about an important initiative she recently started called Women on the Frontline. Caroline, like her predecessors, has noticed that the average Bishop wife feels burdened by their position of leadership. In many parts of the Anglican Communion, as men move from being pastor to Bishop and even to Archbishop, the wives go from mothering their own children to becoming a leadership figure for all the women in their diocese or province. Women on the Frontline was started in order to provide training and community for women in these unique positions of influence.

We hope you enjoy being a fly on a wall for this conversation between longtime friends Archbishop Justin Welby, Caroline Welby and Nicky Gumbel.

Leadership Conversations with Nicky Gumbel Podcast: Jackie Pullinger

In this episode, Nicky and Pippa Gumbel sit down with Jackie Pullinger to talk about her 55 years of missionary work in Hong Kong – ministering to the gang-filled and drug-addicted walled city.

In this conversation, Nicky and Pippa sit down with Jackie Pullinger – one of the great missionaries of our time. At the age of 22, Jackie heard the Lord say “go” so she boarded an international ship travelling port-to-port waiting for God’s permission to get off. After dozens of stops, Jackie finally ended up in Hong Kong at the notorious “Walled City.” 55 years later, Jackie is still ministering in Hong Kong.

When Jackie arrived at the Walled City – gang-filled and drug addicted as it was – the Lord gave her a clear vision of what He wanted to accomplish. It was an awesome picture of children playing in the streets, drug addicts with arms without needle marks and old prostitutes with their heads lifted high. Jackie says “I saw another city, I just didn’t know how to make it happen.” Knowing that her part was faithfulness and obedience, Jackie left the transformation up to the Holy Spirit. In the pockets of favour, Jackie rejoiced. And in the pockets of disappointment and opposition, Jackie persevered all the more, quoting Jesus’ words “turn the other cheek.” Over years of persistently following Jesus’s voice and responding to the needs around her, Jackie saw hundreds of drug-addicted gangsters and sex workers set free through prayer, radical hospitality and life-on-life care.

Jackie often says “I don’t have a ministry, I have a life.” Jackie is full not of theoretical wisdom, but hard fought wisdom earned through a bleeding heart and hard feet. While many Jesus followers are tempted to compartmentalize and segment their faith, the life of Jackie Pullinger challenges one to embrace a holistic discipleship to Jesus; a life where ministry isn’t delegated elsewhere, but where it’s uncomfortably owned by the follower.

In addition to her story, in this conversation you’ll hear Jackie share about the gifts of the Spirit, the gift of tongues and how to pray for those who need Jesus. We hope you are inspired as you listen to Nicky and Pippa’s interview with Jackie Pullinger.

Leadership Conversations with Nicky Gumbel Podcast: Jon Tyson

In this special episode, the roles are reversed as Nicky fields questions from Jon Tyson, lead pastor of Church of the City New York. For any leader, especially the church leader, looking to gather fresh passion for this next year, this conversation is a must-listen.

In this special episode of Leadership Conversations With Nicky Gumbel, the roles are reversed as Nicky fields questions from Jon Tyson, lead pastor of Church of the City New York. For any leader, especially the church leader, looking to gather fresh passion for this next year, this conversation is a must listen.

Jon begins by honouring Nicky and sharing a hypothesis that 100 years from now the story of HTB and Alpha will be shared about commonly as one that profoundly shaped church-mission globally. And in this pandemic season, Nicky expresses that the core mission of HTB and Alpha – to see the lost come to know and encounter Jesus – has become white-hot. While many are referencing the recent projections for when their country will be vaccinated, and doing the math on when this pandemic will end, Nicky is doing the opposite. He does not want to waste the opportunity yielded by this crisis. “This is the greatest evangelistic opportunity of my lifetime. God has got people’s attention – people are thinking, and they are asking questions” says Nicky.

Nicky not only feels the burden for the Church to meet the spiritual needs of the lost in this time, but also the physical needs. He likens the work of the Church to a bicycle – one pedal representing the spiritual needs and the other pedal representing physical needs. If the church can focus on meeting those two needs right now, imagine how the Kingdom of God would advance. “The Church has the infrastructure to meet the people who are in need because the Church is right across every village, town & city” Nicky says. Nicky shares about the thank you notes left on the door of HTB after meeting those felt needs in the community, and Jon notes that people remember those who show up in crisis.

All throughout the conversation, Nicky brims with passion and he doesn’t stop pointing people to the simple, helpful resource of Alpha Online. “We’ve seen it work” says Nicky. Both Jon and Nicky swap stories of how people in the pandemic are giving their lives to Christ not face to face, but screen to screen in the digital space. Jon notes that Nicky could fill a book with stories of people encountering the Holy Spirit in their homes, through Zoom. Who could have predicted that?

The plea from this conversation is clear – we must not wait to make big strides against darkness until the pandemic is over. The Church can start meeting needs now. We can start today. We hope this conversation between Jon and Nicky helps encourage you to move one step closer towards that end.
